9 Strategies to Survive Holiday Parties

We are in the thick of it now, right? How are you holding up? It’s mid-December and your holiday celebrations may be lining up already and before we know it, Christmas will be here followed up by New Years and then we’re clean slating it in 2016 — truly, I can’t wait!

But that’s also no reason to throw in the towel right now. While cookies, cheese, candy and cocktails are everywhere (and why does everything delicious have to start with the letter C?) simply being cognizant of your goals and your health can help nudge you in the right direction. And of course, I have a few helpful insights to help you do just that.

9 Strategies to Survive Holiday Parties

1. DON’T GO ANYWHERE HUNGRY.

Under the guise of “saving calories” to splurge later. Unless you have the willpower of the jolly green giant, this plan will surely backfire. Trust me, I know. Hunger is your worst enemy, it’s like kryptonyte. You lose all sense of control and moderation and you’ll end up over-doing it everywhere.

2. PICK A SMART PLACE TO STAND.

When you get to your party, do not sidle up next to the cheese platter or dessert tray (or any pile of food for that matter). They all serve as triggers and you’ll eat 100 more calories per minute than if you simply stand on the other side of the room. “Out of sight out of mind” is no joke.

3. EXERCISE MORE ON DAYS YOU CAN.

Not just because it helps with your caloric budget, but because it gives you caloric perspective. If it takes you 30 minutes to burn 300 caloires, then the 30 seconds it takes to swallow the extra cookie just naturally seems like a bad idea.

4. HAVE A PLAN.

Seriously, so simple, and so effective! I forgot this last weekend and I paid for it on Sunday. Ouch. Just know what you’re going to eat and drink and decide how you want to feel when you leave the party and the next morning. Going in blind leaves you at the mercy of what could be bad decisions. And remember your #1 goal is to focus on and enjoy the company, not just the food or booze ūüėČ

5. PICK HIGHER NUTRITION ROI FOODS.

This means get more nutrition bang for your caloric buck. Pick foods with lots of protein and fiber to fill up on fewer calories. Lean cuts of meat and veggie/hummus trays can be your best options here.

6. DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL.

I am a bit of a hypocrite here because I hate to say no to a party. But remember, your primary goal this season should be about having fun, enjoying the season, and loving your friends and family. It does not need to be a stress-ball, over-indulgent, guilt-ridden season. Say no when you need to and invest in your own peace of mind with a little rest.

7. HYDRATE.

Water can save you! Dehydration can be disguised as hunger and cause you to eat more than you should. Being well hydrated can also keep you from drinking too many cocktails and overdoing it with holiday cheer.

8. BE PERFECT WHEN YOU CAN.

I know perfect is a scary word, but making smart choices mid-week really can combat toxic weekends. This is the perfect time to put my 3-Day Detox plan into effect Tuesday – Thursday for the rest of the year. I am ūüėČ ha ha Ultimately, it saves you time and money once you get all the juices and soups prepared and you don’t have to think about food at all during the week. Huge plus! And it gives you a little more wiggle room on the weekends.

9. BE SMART ABOUT YOUR BOOZE.

You know I wrote SkinnyTinis, right? The original low calorie cocktail book? I know my alcohol calories. Here’s another quick video from my Simple Secrets program where we cover the basics of how to handle alcohol as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
