Who doesn’t love to give? And let’s be real, who does not love to get free stuff? Cheerios has dialed in with the Buy One Give One campaign and I’m pretty stoked to talk about it today.
There aren’t many products or brands that have spanned my entire life. Ones that I remember as a kid and that I still see on the regular today. Let me share two of my most memorable Cheerios stories…they might be 30 years apart in duration, but I think that’s what makes it so cool…
My Childhood Cheerios Memory
I grew up in a single father home, which came with it’s perks and it’s pitfalls. Perks included camping every-other-weekend, staying up late watching TV, playing in the dirt in the backyard, swimming at the beach till the sunset, always being supported and encouraged to follow my heart and essentially growing up under the guidance and support of a fearless, loving, wicked smart dude.
That said, elaborate meals were not a part of my childhood. Easy, shelf stable and inexpensive ingredients were of high priority. This made Honey Nut Cheerios a staple in my house. Along with ketchup, baloney, peanut butter, black olives and the fixings for zucchini boats. They were my morning breakfast and my afternoon snack. As I grew-up, I naturally gravitated towards the lower sugar version and those actually became a staple in my first college apartments. Nostalgia is hard to break.
My Adult Cheerios Memory
This isn’t so much a long-standing memory, more a finite moment in time. I was a road warrior in my old life, on airplanes every-other-week. In case you’re a stranger to flying, sitting next to a baby, or anything that qualifies as a lap child and does not require it’s own seat is generally not a good situation.
As I sat sympathetically and yet, resentful of the toddler next to me that would not stop wining and squirming and the poor mother who knew not what do to…we were both saved by the kind woman who sat in the row of seats just ahead of us. She popped her kind and knowing eyes over her seat and said “Do you need some Cheerios?”.
I’m not a mother, I was completely unaware of the magic power of Cheerios to a toddler. The mother next to me was not as she quite literally gasped “OMG, yes please! As soon as I sat down I realized I forgot ours….” As if it was a necessary piece of equipment required to travel with a baby.
Now I know why…not a minute passed before the kiddo settled down and I smiled a sigh of relieve to myself, sent a little thank you prayer to those above and I returned to Desperate Housewives and my Cabernet. The next 3.5 hours of my life were about to be dramatically better.
Who Would I Give a Box To?
Every mother, father and road warrior out there who runs the risk of a fussy baby on an airplane. Ha! Or the flight attendants to store next to the other emergency equipment. And maybe a box of Honey Nut to my good ‘ole pops just to make him remember our gold ‘old days and smile.
You can feel good about giving this fun Cheerios snack to someone you are about. Nutritionally speaking, they are pretty solid. A serving of the regular yellow box is a full cup, has just 100 calories, 0 grams trans fat, 3 grams fiber, 3 grams of protein and only one gram of sugar. And did you know that Cheerios are made of whole grain oats — making them gluten free? Toss in a banana and some strawberries with a milk of your choice and you have a yummy, colorful breakfast or snack!
Who Would You Give a Box To?
Do you have a memory or funny little story that makes to smile inside like these two do for me? Is there anybody out there who’s day you can brighten with a little surprise yellow box? If so, I’ve got good news for you!
