I created this plan well over a year because I frequently find myself in one of the three scenarios I just mentioned about once a month and short detoxes are a great way to get back on track, quick! But I’m a marathon runner, so I can’t take the nutrient deficiency that comes with most traditional juices cleanses (some are as low as 600 calories a day with no protein or fiber). While a traditional detox leaves you feeling great, the process of getting there can be painful, and for me, too disruptive to my training schedule.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who likes to detox but also still maintain my energy.

A little insight into my detox philosophy…

I don’t normally write about fast or quick weight loss, mostly because I don’t believe in it. Real weight loss is ultimately a simple mathematical equation and it takes time to see the pounds peel off for good (remember, it took some time to put then on too, right?). Anything much more than 1-2 pounds per week or 1% of your body weight is likely not fat loss. But you know what? Sometimes life i toxic! Cocktails and cookies add up and they leave a residue that makes you feel fluffy and icky — maybe even “fat.” So when I got on the scale Monday morning and saw a number I hadn’t seen all year, I decided it was time for some fast action.

What makes this 3 Day Detox Different?

As I mentioned earlier, I am not really a fan of simple juice cleanses because I get way too hungry and I have a hard time working out or I get way too space cadet-y, which makes it hard to work. So I decided to do a little twist on the traditional juicing detox. In addition to fresh juice, I decided to add smoothies for protein and roasted vegetable soups for fiber and satiation. And of course, liters and liters of water and some dieters tea to move everything through. The plan not only includes delicious recipes, but also detailed instructions, a nifty tracker, easy grocery guide and daily email coaching so you have an idea of what to expect.

Every time I do this 3 day detox, it’s a different experience, but ultimately I lose weight, feel great and always simplicity of not having to think about or prepare food. Not to mention, less dishes to wash. Day one is always the easiest, day two the hardest, day three you see the light at the end of the tunnel and day 4, you may not even want it to end. It’s that great.

The first time I did this plan, I literally lost 7 lbs, and I don’t weigh all that much to begin with. On average I lose about 4 pounds, and about two of them will come back on shortly after the detox is over. But you still come out way ahead for very little effort and the feeling you have on the morning of day 4, makes it all worth it!  It’s a quick and simple way to obliterate a temporary lifestyle retox and get back on track in a matter of days. I didn’t do the plan 100% on point, but I did my best and I still lost 5 lbs. The biggest thing I am thankful for is the fact that I am now truly trying to be healthier, and plan to keep up the drinking veggie juices and protein shakes. I had never been able to do this before. The structure you provided was exactly what I needed and I LOVED how simple it was to get my grocery list ready and to schedule my juices on the calendar provide. It made it so easy to follow!

Simple 3 Day Detox Instructions

I created this schedule for structure, but I wouldn’t get too tied up in following it to the minute. Every day was a little different depending on my schedule, when I was working out and how hungry I felt. If you choose to follow this plan (or a variation of) this is a good guide to give you an idea of how the day broke down. The idea was that I always had 2-3 fresh juices, 2-3 protein smoothies, 1 vegetable soup , 4 liters of water and 1 detox tea per day. I believe it netted out to about 900-1200 calories per day, 30-40g of fiber and 70-90g of protein. Potentially a little bit on skinny side of the diet scale for me, but for a 3 day detox, pretty nutritionally sufficient.

  • 6:00am: Fresh Detox Juice
  • 7:00am: Yoga + 1/2 L Water
  • 8:00am: Protein Smoothie
  • 9:00am: 1/2 L Water
  • 10:00am: Fresh Detox Juice
  • 11:00am: 1/2 L Water
  • 12:00pm: Pureed Vegetable Soup
  • 1:00pm: 1/2 L Water
  • 2:00pm: Fresh Detox Juice
  • 3:00pm: 1/2 L Water
  • 4:00pm: Protein Smoothie
  • 5:00pm: 1/2 L Water
  • 6:00pm: Cardio + 1/2 L Water
  • 7:00pm: Protein Smoothie
  • 8:00pm: 1/2 L Water

3 Day Detox Recipes

Variety is the spice of life! And the more color you get, the more nutrients your body benefits from. Basic Fresh Detox Juice

  • 1/2 Beet
  • 1/2 Green Apple
  • 2 cups Raw Spinach
  • 3 stalks of Celery
  • 1/2 Cucumber
  • 1″ fresh Ginger
  • 1/4 Lemon

Directions: Squeeze the lemon juice in the bottom of the glass. Put everything else in the juicer. Poor your detox juice on top of your lemon juice and enjoy right away. If you let it sit to long, you’ll lose a lot of the enzyme goodness.

3-day detox juice recipes

Vanilla Berry Protein Smoothie

  • 1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 5 frozen Strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 T ground Fax Seeds
  • 6-8oz Water

Directions: put everything in the blender and start at your lowest level until all the chunks are ground up. Then slowly increase the speed and let it run for at least 30 seconds to froth it up and make it more fluffy and delicious.

3-day detox smoothie recipes

Pureed Vegetable Soup

  • 1 Medium Cauliflower
  • 3 cups Water
  • 3 cups Spinach
  • 3 T ground Flax Seeds
  • 1 T Lemon Juice
  • 1 T Spicy Mustard (optional)
  • 1 T Braggs Liquid Aminos
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper

Directions: Core the cauliflower, chop florets into large chunks and save stems for juicing. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil. Add cauliflower and let boil for 30 minutes. Add the boiled cauliflower to a blender or food processor with 2 cups of the water it boiled in (preserves some nutrition value) and blend until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth and serve.

  2. How many servings does the puréed veggie soup make?

    • Hi Connie! The soup by volume is easily 2 servings. But when I estimated the calories and nutrition for the day, I used the entire recipe. So if you broke it into two servings for each day, your calories and fiber would be lower that I estimated. Hope that helps!

  3. What is Super Dieters tea? Is there a recipe for it?

  4. Would you get the same benefits from blending the juice rather than using a juicer? Or would I be in fiber overload?

    • It might be…but you can try it and see how it goes? Fiber is indigestible, so in theory it should all pass through ;) But that might not be all that comfortable, you could try a more broth based soup instead of the cauliflower to cut back the load? Smoothies also often have more calories than juices, so watch the ingredients to keep calories in check.

  5. If I want to make the detox juices, but have to work during the day, can I make them ahead in the morning so I can have them the two times you have them during the day?

    • Hi Liz! It’s best to drink your juice within 20 minutes of juicing, but I totally get that’s tough for most lifestyles. I’ve recently started juicing my entire day at once to save time and cleanup and I’m storing them in mason jars. Just squeeze a lemon wedge in the bottom, overfill slightly, seal airtight and keep it cool. You’ll be good for a day or 2 that way :) Enjoy!

  7. Hi Karen! I think mine usually come out to 12-16 ounces. It depends on how crazy I get with added fruit :) I have mini 8oz mason jars I use to store the fresh juice, but for smoothies you’d want at least 16 oz. Let me know how it goes for you!

    is the dieters tea really necessary? I am starting this tomorrow but don’t have the tea and am not sure I want to use it anyway. It seems to me like “moving things through” would not be a problem on a liquid diet? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

    • Hi Kerry! It’s totally up to you and not at all necessary. But I do recommend an herbal tea of sorts at night, just as a soothing way to wind down the night. Also, this is not a detox where you are supposed to be overly hungry. So if you find yourself too hungry, be sure to add an extra protein shake and/or include some good, healthy fat in one of the other two like avocado or coconut oil. Good luck!

    Thank you! This is my first go at any sort of liquid diet, but this seemed like a very achievable plan for me and I am really looking forward to getting a bit of a jump start on my weight loss. the soup ingredients have been prepared (roasted sweet potatoes, boiled cauliflower), and smoothie ingredients and Suja juices purchased! Thanks for the advice on the avocado/coconut oil for hunger – I work out pretty vigorously each morning and may need that!

    • You are going to kill this! I can’t wait to hear how it goes! Everybody is different, so it’s important to make sure you really tune into how you feel. You are not supposed to feel bad I promise! Sometime I do it, I need the extra fat, sometimes I don’t – it’s weird. But I can tell you that every time I get to day 3, I go to half of day 4 because it feels good!

  10. Well I’m going out to a celebration dinner for my son on Friday night (decided after I planned my detox) so this is actually a 2.75 day detox! But it’s all good – I’m SURE I’ll be doing this again! And I’ll definitely let you know how it goes.

  11. Well its 4pm and I am too full for my protein smoothie! Everything tastes great but the butternut squash soup was so filling that I should have skipped the 2pm juice and gone for the protein shake at 3 or 4. Ill try that tomorrow. So far I feel fine – the only issue I’m having is I can’t drink as much water as is called for – only 2 liters so far…but I’m working on it! Cant wait to see what this brings tomorrow!

  12. Felt great this morning and a few pounds lighter is why! Keeping it up today and no issues…I have to back off the water a bit as tonight is my golf night and Ill never make it around the course if I drink all of my water! :)

  13. Would this work okay is you’re also doing intense exercise or should it be over “rest” days?

    • Excellent question Stephanie!! I do love this detox because I can still exercise (most I can hardly think straight let alone run) and I’ve found that I can still do moderate exercise but anything intense is too hard for me. I’m not exactly sure why because the macros of this plan are still pretty balanced, but I think I just must eat a ton on a normal basis. I have had some clients have some of their best workouts on day 2 of this. So my best advice is to plan for moderate activity and if you feel good — go for it!   15. Are the juice and protein shake recipes for the entire day, like will the one recipe need to be divided by 3. Or do you juice the 1/2 apple ect. 3x a day?
