I know what you’re thinking…”Fat Burning Dessert” is an oxy-moran. I mean, what could be more ironic or counter-intuitive than that? However, after my many years of experience in the weight loss field, I have identified a variety of fat burning foods.
This recipe is just too good not to share, and is packed full of fat burning foods! And it’s coming at you just in time for holiday parties and Thanksgiving!
How can a dessert be “fat burning?”
Well, that is a good question. I’m not sure this recipe will actually burn fat as a result of simply eating it. Ha! Sorry if that sounded misleading. But it does contain only fat burning foods.
Look at it this way, while it’s a dessert, you’re getting pretty amazing macro-nutrients in here. Burning fat, vs. simply loosing weight is an interesting process and it involves a lot more than just the food you eat.
However, when it comes to food, it’s about macronutrient composition and making sure you’re getting a good nutrition ROI for your caloric buck.
By that I mean make sure you get some protein, healthy fat and fiber for your dessert calories. Those help you eat less as they are more satisfying than simple sugar and you stay fuller longer, preventing you from eating more later.
How this Cobbler stacks up against it’s traditional counterpart:
Your traditional pie or cake would contain a lot of fat (probably saturated butter) and sugar (probably processed white sugar) and flour (probably processed white flour — a.k.a gluten).
This Fat Burning Dessert contains none of those. These ingredients are minimally processed (if processed at all) and will deliver well under 200 calories, 4g of protein, 5g healthy fat and 5g of fiber per serving.
And it’s delicious baked cinnamon apples covered in a peanut butter crumble crust, I mean, come on — this is a good one!
Apple Cobbler with Peanut Butter Crumble Crust Ingredients
- 2 large Green Apples
- 2T Honey or Nektar Honey Crystals*
- ½ tsp Cinnamon
- 1 T Coconut Oil
- 3T PB2**
- ½ cup Oats
- 1/8 tsp Sea Salt
**You can use regular Peanut Butter instead of the PB2 Powder if you’d like. It will add about 50 calories per serving and 5g of healthy fat.
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Cut apples into 1/4” wedges and add to large plastic bag or bowl. Sprinkle honey and cinnamon on apples and shake or mix until well coated and add to a ceramic baking dish.
- Combine oats, PB2, coconut oil and salt. Mix until crumbled and well combined.
- Top apple with crumbles and bake for 40 min, until apples are super soft and the top is crunchy.
- Top with 1T of Greek yogurt sweetened with cinnamon or 1 T whipped vegan coconut cream.
*What are Nektar Honey Crystals?
Um…these are pretty awesome! With only 12 calories per teaspoon, these all natural little crystals are like honey without the mess. Honey happens to be my sweetener of choice these days because of the flavor and the antioxidants.
You could use either in this recipe, but I liked these crystals because they coat the apples so well, just like sugar would, and you can be very efficient with your sweetener calories and make this entire dessert recipe with only 2 tablespoons.
And you can use them for more than dessert! They are good in your coffee or tea (hot or cold!), morning oatmeal or yogurt and even with more savory dishes like chicken or grilled meat because they leave a crunchy glaze. Yum!
