2014 is here and Healthy Aspirations are at an all time high!
Juicing is a hot topic and for many great reasons. I’ve been an active juicer for about 3 years now, and I am a fan. Now, I’m not really a fan of the long juice detox programs that have you on an extremely low level of daily calories for 3-5 days (or more). Personally, I happen to be too active for caloric restriction and with Boston training right around the corner, now is not the time to cut down on my energy consumption.
Juice Detoxes Definitely Have Their Perks
Juicing detoxes and Juice Cleanses are all around us and for pretty good reason. They are wildly effective at boosting health. The juicer does almost all of the digestion work for you. By the time the juice hits your system, the nutrients are as bioavailable as they are going to get. This gives your digestive system a bit of a rest (not to mention you’re light on the macronutrients — protein, carbohydrates and fat) so your body has even less work to do. When you give your system this rest, then super charge it with phytochemical power from raw juice — you end up with a win-win. Your body does not have to spend so much time creating digestive enzymes to break down food. This gives it time to do other things– like fight disease and aging!
Juicing Has Crazy-Beautifying-Benefits
If you’re like me and not really a candidate for a long juice cleanse or detox, this does not mean you should pack up your juicer or cross it off your wish list. Adding a simple juice to your daily routine as a replacement for a high sugar/low quality snack can have an immediate, positive impact on your vitality and well being! You still get the benefits of the massive bioavailability of the nutrients and the boost of phytochemical power. And that’s not even taking into consideration the health enhancements you get from eliminating a low quality snack that wasn’t doing much other than adding to your waistline.

No Time to Juice?
Then it’s ok to buy one ready made! But a word of caution here. If you’re buying at the grocery store, be sure to read the nutrition label. Often times, to appease leery or newbie juicers, the manufacturer will load up the juice with more fruit puree and juice than necessary. You may end up with as much sugar as a can of soda.
And if you’re getting your juice at a juice bar, be careful of what they put in it as well. With the growing trends in juicing, establishments have been quick to add these colorful concoctions to their menus. But you know what? Juicing can be an expensive offering. Every so often you’ll find somebody who fills the volume of their juice with simple apple juice. Now I always put a green apple in my juice, but when it’s added excessively, it just ups the sugar ante, not the nutrition.
