As a fitness blogger and health coach with 17 years in the wellness and weight loss industries, people are often surprised when they find out that I own “fat cats.” Yes, it’s true. I am the proud owner of two, old, fluffy purr-balls, Sam and Sophie. They are the byproduct of a failed relationship from well over a decade ago and they have been through it all with me ever since…my furry sidekicks. Samson topped the scales at just over 17 pounds and Sophie was pushing 19 at the end of this Summer.
How I ended up with “fat cats”
Just before their first birthday, my then little kitties and I took the leap of faith and left our suburban oasis of North County San Diego and moved to the downtown urban jungle. I had never lived in a city environment and didn’t really know what to expect. We settled in an 850 sq. ft condo in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. Great for me, but left little room for them to climb, jump and explore. They quickly became “city kitties” and lost any an all instinct to hunt, sprint, run around and chase anything. 10 years later, we’re still down here. We have more square footage and a large patio, but the “city kitty” mentality damage has been done.
Short of the occasional tense position if they spot a bird outdoors on window ledge, they don’t run around much or get very excited. They know that each morning I’ll fill their kibble bowls and even give them a chunk of delicious wet food for breakfast. After that, all they have to do is roll off the couch and stroll into the kitchen and lunch and dinner kibble are waiting. Long story short, they have grown up very fat and happy.
The perfect cat diet.
The bummer is that while they are pretty and happy, excess fat is not good — on us humans or our furry loved ones. So about a year ago I started really digging into cat nutrition so that I could help them lose a little weight through a better quality diet. I was 100% aware they would not be interested in a kitty-cat treadmill and the Fitbit I wrapped around Sophie’s neck simply did not motivate her to move more (LOL — I really did that!).
I learned that cats are legit carnivores and grain is not good for them. They don’t have amylase (an enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates) in their saliva and in fact, they say that the only grain a cat should eat would be the seed that was in the stomach of the bird that it ate. Gross. But true. Grain-Free Pet Food is the way to go.
Their diet should consist of protein and fat and very, very little carbs. A “low fat” diet for a cat trying to lose weight is ludicrous and wet food is better for your chubby kitty than the dry. I’ve been honestly shocked at the shortage of information around cat nutrition and if I wasn’t so busy trying to help humans eat smarter and lose weight, I’d develop my own line of cat food. But the best news is that I don’t have to. Nulo™ is leading the pack with their line of high quality, grain-free pet foods and it’s easy to find at Petsmart locations everywhere.
Nulo™ Pet Food: Healthier Together
I was so happy when Nulo reached out to me as a part of their “Healthier Together” campaign encouraging pet parents and pets to get fit and healthy together. I can’t take my cat’s running or to yoga with me, but I can, at the very least, feed them the right type of food for their feline bodies.
Nulo Pet foods are all high in meat protein, completely grain free and have only low glycemic carbs as ingredients. Their products also contain a patented probiotic, BC30, which supports your pet’s immune system, provides improved nutrient absorption, reduces gas, improves stool quality, and prevents growth of yeast organisms that may cause skin problems and ear infections. Nulo blends are made and distributed in smaller batches to ensure they spend less time on the shelf and taste better when they land in the bowl.
Nulo is pet nutrition inspired by world class athletes.
I seriously love this company’s mission. Their tag line is “Fuel Their Inner Athlete™” They know that healthy, active humans understand the importance of quality nutrition to their overall well-being and the same translates to their pets. That’s why they choose Nulo. I agree and am thrilled with this company’s product and mission. I would love to see more pet owners dial into the quality of the food they are feeding their fur babies. We don’t always think about it, but the quality of kibble in the dish can go a long ways towards your pets quality of life and longevity.
