Tis the season to be merry! But let’s be real, it can also be a season of distress, toxicity and perhaps even a little guilt. Staying fit, both mentally and physically can be your best line of defense to ensure that you do in fact, truly, enjoy the holiday season. Today’s Clean & Colorful conversation includes my top three tips to help you do just that.
The Clean & Colorful Solution
My goal in life is to help you live a Clean & Colorful Lifestyle to help you feel better, look better, naturally have more energy, reduce disease and probably even lose some weight. And to make that a reality, I’m coming at you every Monday from my Clean & Colorful kitchen (well, most of the time from the kitchen) with some real life tips, tricks, and strategies to help you master the 4 Universal Diet Truths:
- Eat more whole food.
- Eat all 5 colors.
- Drink a juice/smoothie.
- Exercise at least 21+ minutes per day.
Every Monday I’ll touch on one of those topics that will help you feel better and look better. You can register at cleanandcolorful.com and I’ll send you a free jumpstart guide that teaches you how to get started living a Clean & Colorful lifestyle today!
Last week I showed you how to make my favorite Turmeric Tonic Shot and discussed all the anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, blood glucose regulating, fat burning and immunity boosting potential it has. This week we are on to the fourth universal diet truth, staying fit every-single-day.
The reason I recommend 21-minutes of exercise every-single-day is for two primary reasons. First, it’s a keystone habit. The days you exercise, you will be more productive all day long. Second, often, the hardest part is just getting started. It can be hard to find an hour to exercise a day — but who can’t find 21 minutes? And chances are, once you’re out there, feeling great, you much just find more time.
Tip #1: Let Go Of Expectations, Every Little Bit Counts
Don’t let perfection steal your progress! Just because you can’t get across town to do Pilates with the ladies does not mean you can’t take a few extra steps, dance a little harder at this weekend’s party or pick up the pace while you’re holiday shopping. Every single step counts! Get a Fitbit or some sort of activity tracker so you can see how fast it all adds. up!
Tip #2: Slow Down to Get More Done
This sounds so counter-intuitive, but I’m pretty sure it’s the Dali Lama who says
If you don’t have time to meditate 20-minutes a day, you need to meditate an hour a day.
That saying always makes me chuckle and there is quite a bit of truth in it. I’ve recommitted to my daily meditation practice because it’s one of the hardest things I do all day long and I feel like it provides some of the best benefits. I’m terrible at silencing my mind and sitting still. I’m like a hamster on a wheel, just go go go. And just like that wheel, just because you’re “going” does not actually mean you’re actually getting anywhere.
I use the Daily Calm app for my guided meditation and I enjoy it so much. I think you will find it to be a very valuable practice as well. The clarity, peace and rejuvenation pays itself off well beyond the 10 minute daily investment. Anytime I have a friend or client struggling in any area of their life, my first question is “do you have a daily meditation practice?” And I follow that up with a Calm recommendation 😉
Tip #3: Multi-task Mindfulness with Fitness: Aka: YOGA!
I made a commitment to make Yoga my first priority in December and into 2017. It’s always been a side dish to my main dish of running, followed by spin, weights and then yoga. It has traditionally been the one workout that was always the easiest for me to skip. Not anymore! I’m too busy these days to spend multiple hours at the gym so I need to multi-task my exercise with mindfullness and yoga is the best way for me to do that.
If you do not have a daily or regular yoga practice, please make this your first priority. You do not need to go to a fancy or scary studio and it is as hard or peaceful as you want it to be. I will recommend my friend Sara’s at-home program all-day-long because I adore her! She is the creator of Sara Lou Yoga, is a master of mindfulness and a joy to be around. No matter where you are in your yoga journey, Sara’s program can help!
