2014 Boston Marathon Training Summary

I don’t think I remember ever being so excited to run a marathon than I am right now! This time next week I’ll be running the 2014 Boston Marathon!

It’s been a long road this 14 weeks of training. I have one week of taper left and the it’s up to the weather and marathon gods to carry me 26.2 from the start to the finish line!

This is what it looks like when you realize you are done training, you feel good and are ready to run a marathon!

2014 Boston Marathon Training Summary

  • Total Running: 30 miles
  • Total Yoga: 2 hours
  • Total Weights: 2.5 hour
  • Total Cross Train: 2 hour

This was a good week. Which is lovely on top of last week’s 50+ miles. I’m trying to be really smart about these runs and none of them really work for conditioning at this point — it’s all about your mindset right now. ¬†I’ve done all the conditioning my body and lifestyle would allow the past 14 weeks and now it’s just really about building confidence and overcoming doubt.

  • Monday I went for an easy 6 miles in the park and a stretchy yoga class.
  • Tuesday I took a much needed rest from the pounding of the pavement and went to a spin, yoga and the beach ūüôā
  • Wednesday my knee was giving me a bit of trouble so I swapped thursdays spin class and went to my favorite yoga pump class after.
  • Thursday I got to run with Heather in Mission Bay and we did the old 2/3/2 tempo and 7:30 happened, but I wouldn’t call it effortless.
  • Friday I took a rest day and brought SkinnyTinis to San Diego Living, that was fun! Look for a summary post on that to run Wednesday. Then we shoved off to the mountains for a little RnR get away that was amazing and not long enough!
  • Saturday I went on my very first horseback ride ever! Then came home and ran 1/5/1 at about an 8min pace.
  • Sunday I finally got to meet Natalie, our Orange County #BBB who will be staying with us in Boston. She’s super speedy, but agreed to run with me for an “easy 10” in Mission Bay. We chatted the whole way and I was so happy to have an easy 10 at an 8:30 pace.

How I’m Feeling

My goal race pace is 8:25, so I think I feel exactly the way I should today. Woo hoo! I been having some minor structural issues still. Super tight right hamstring. Slightly odd on-and-off achy right knee and a funny little thing happening in my left ankle. None of them are worrying me beyond belief right now. But I do think that I’ll follow up on that ART action when I get back home and hopefully get these hips in better alignment while I recover from Boston so I can run stronger in the sumer and Fall.

This is nothing but taper fun! Beach, quality nutrition and treating yourself to new fun stuff! It's earned :)

Lessons Learned

Well, a lot. 99 days full of lessons to be exact! Here is a summary of all these posts since day one. I would never expect anybody to read all of these, but for my own sake and future reference, I’d like them all to be linked and archived in one simple place.

Moving Forward

That’s got to round out to be about 500 miles. I’m still mad about getting sick and losing 40 miles, but what’s done is done and now I just bask in my health now and look forward to the run! I’m still alcohol and caffeine free. I do miss my coffee, but I sure don’t miss the booze. I forget how awesome it feels to wake up rested and ready to go. I love a clear mind and a clean body. I say this all the time a few weeks into detox but I wonder if I’ll ever drink again. Ha!

I really can’t explain how happy I am to be flying back across the country in less than a week. Lacing up and lining up at that start line and running clear across the city to the finish–smiling the whole way. I have to remember this race is not about me, it’s not about my time — it’s about runners, Boston, survivors and making a come back as a community.
