3 Reasons To Start Foam Rolling Today

If you’re a frequent runner, weight lifter, dancer, or even a desk jockey, you’ve probably noticed that your body doesn’t feel good at times.

You know what I’m talking about. Hip pain. Knee pain. Tight muscles. Angry back. And so on.

For years I spent tons of time and money on chiropractors, massages, physical therapy, muscle creams, and stretching trying to fix my many aches and pains. My body seemed to be giving out after years of frequent exercising and dancing.

3 Reasons To Start Foam Rolling Today

More than just a pain in the butt

As time went on my body seemed to get more and more angry with my constant exercise. And I began to get more frustrated. There were days where I wasn’t sure what to do.

I hadn’t reached my fitness goals yet. I wasn’t done with dancing. But the more I trained, the more pain my body was in. I began to feel depressed as I thought I’d have to give up on my goals to keep my body happy.

In a last ditch effort to make my body happy again I decided to try foam rolling.

The power of a good foam roller

I started foam rolling daily. At first it hurt, and to be honest it still does. But something magical happened as I stayed consistent with my foam rolling.

The pain I had felt for years started going away! I had been to chiropractors and physical therapists with no change. And after foam rolling daily on my $18 roller, I started to feel like a new person!

My knee and hip pain was significantly reduced. My hamstring injury, which liked to flair up every few weeks, felt so much better. I could run and do the splits again! I felt like I had a new lease on life.

The point of this super long intro

I hope that telling my story can save you years of pain and lost fitness goals. By simply foam rolling daily I’ve been able to do so much more and push myself in ways I couldn’t before.

I hope you take from this blog post that recovery is just as important as exercising. Without recovery you’ll lose out on opportunities and spend way too much time in pain. And let’s face it. When you have fitness goals there is no time for pain.

So let’s get on to the three reasons why foam rolling is amazing!

For those who are new to foam rolling, foam rolling is a form of myofascial release, aka a form of massage used to “release” tight muscles. The difference here is that we’re using a foam roller to do the massaging instead of a massage therapist.

Self-myofascial release (SMR) is extremely popular with the fitness crowd, and for good reason. Rolling before and after a workout can help reduce injury, speed up recovery time, and so much more!

1. Injury prevention and quick recovery

Foam rolling is awesome for injury prevention, and is most affective when done pre and post workout. Rolling before your workout will help to get the blood flowing and reduce tension in the muscles. If you foam roll after your workout, rolling helps get rid of blood that has pooled in the working muscles. This allows fresh blood to come in and begin the healing process.

Preparing your muscles for your workout will help reduce your chance of injury while a post-workout roll will speed up your recovery time.

2. Increased flexibility and range of motion

Stretching isn’t the only way to increase your flexibility. Foam rolling is now becoming a popular way to increase flexibility and range of motion.

Studies show that foam rolling helps to release tension in the muscles by breaking up the fascia (that fibrous layer of connective tissue that surrounds all of the muscles in our body). This takes pressure off our joints and allows the body to move more freely. We can also enjoy a decrease in muscle tightness and improved flexibility.

3. It’s free!

Well almost, you do have to purchase a foam roller. Luckily I found my foam roller on Amazon for cheap!

The benefits of SMR are huge and go way beyond what we discussed here. Overall, SMR can greatly improve your quality of life and make training much more enjoyable.

However, getting a massage a few times per week would get rather pricey. Unless you’re an elite athlete and a massage therapist is provided or you’re super wealthy, I’m guessing that regular massage isn’t an option. Luckily, daily SMR is free after the initial foam roller purchase. This will allow you to reap the benefits of daily massage without the hefty price tag!
