When was the last time you went to a tea party? For me, it was like three decades ago, and I’m not that old. Needless to say, my tea party hosting skills might not be top notch. But when Lipton Tea was looking for people to host tea parties to showcase their yummy new black, herbal and green teas, I jumped at the chance. Why? Because I saw this as an opportunity to host a tea party with a twist (literally) and that is something I’m very, very good at!
Welcome to my Skinny Mar-TEA-ni Party!
Since 2008 I’ve mixing and matching low calorie mixers with high quality alcohol. Nope, I was never a bartender, but I was always a girl who liked a fancy martini and was interested in staying skinny. That’s what lead me to write and even publish SkinnyTinis – All the Fun for Half the Calories in 2009 (and is essentially why this blog was originally born). At the time, it was cutting edge and will always be the first ever published low calorie cocktail book. The trick is simple. Eliminate high sugar alcohols and mixers and replace them with naturally lower sugar flavors. Tea is quite possible the PEFECT SkinnyTini mixer so this party is a match made in heaven!
Skinny Mar-TEA-ni Party Essentials
You’re going to need at least these five things to host an excellent Mar-TEA-ni party. But let me preface by saying getting positive RSVPs for this party is the easiest thing ever. The lure of skinny booze, delicious flavors and girl time is nearly impossible to pass up.
1. The Tea
This party was sponsored by Lipton Tea, which was the perfect fit! Their new black and herbal varieties and improved green teas are the perfect mixers with bold and stimulating flavors, such as Enticing Chai, Pure Green, Orange Passionfruit Jasmine and Peach Mango. My mixology hat went on the second they arrived in my kitchen. You can check out the full line-up of Lipton Green, Black and Herbal tea flavors here. You just need to triple steep the tea so the flavor is super dense and holds up against the booze. I was presently surprised by the rich flavors of the new Lipton Teas!
2. The Mixers
In addition to the yummy tea flavors, accents of fresh fruit, bubble water and low sugar fruit juices are excellent additions to add flavor, depth, nutrition to your mar-TEA-nis. I stocked up on more than I needed and you can reference the exact ingredients I ended up with at the end of this post. These also provide as great additions to the tea to serve sans alcohol, on the rocks, for your booze-free friends (another cocktail party MUST have).
3. The Alcohol
All of these Mar-TEA-nis were all very light. I used a different alcohol base in each one. To make sure there was something for everybody, I picked up regular vodka, whipped cream vodka, tequila, bourbon and of course, bubbles. These unique alcohols mixed with the dense tea flavors with the additional mixers were seriously all the right building blocks of delicious Mar-TEA-nis! And not to sound too repetitive, but as a responsible cocktail hostess, it’s always important to have several, equally appealing, booze-free options or your guests as well.
4. The Mood & Snacks
This was a Mar-TEA-ni party but just having the drinks does not a party make. Music and snacks are essential. When hosting any cocktail party, it’s always important to be mindful of food. People need to eat when they drink or bad things can happen. In this case, I hosted the party at 6pm on a weeknight so I knew most would be coming from work and not have eaten. I was sure to have a giant Kale Kitchen Sink Salad out along with some veggies and a other hearty appetizers. I thought “there is no way these ladies will eat all this food.” And true to party form, it was nearly all gone at the end of the night.
5. The Girls!
My favorite part! I’ve doubted myself many times in life. And anytime I do, I sit back and take a look at the quality of girlfriends I have in my life. These are self selected family, we choose to be friends and to spend time together. We make each other a priority simply because we want to. If I am a reflection of these gals, than I have to assume I’m doing alright in life. That realization has gotten me through many a rough day.
Skinny Mar-TEA-ni Recipes
These were all a hit. I had so much fun mixing and shaking in the kitchen. It has been quite some time since I played skinny mixologist, so it’s nice to know that my skills are not rusted and gone. It is always amazing to me how everybody’s flavor pallets are different. You will never please everybody with one cocktail, and that’s why a variety is so important. I’d say these were equally split amongst the ladies. Personally, the Berries and Bubbles was my fav!
Important Preparation Tip: You need to prepare your tea in advance and make sure it’s 3x the regular strength. You’ll want to allow plenty of time for steeping and cooling. If it’s not cool, it will melt through more ice and dilute the flavor of your cocktail.
