Clean and Colorful Cocktail: Healthy Margarita Recipe

Cinco de Mayo is coming up this week and here to help you celebrate in clean & colorful style is my new Berry Beet Healthy Margarita Recipe! I always hate being the bearer of bad news, but traditional margaritas easily add up to 300++ calories. Mostly from the high sugar, pretty nasty sweet and sour mix that is commonly used. It will run you nearly 30 calories per ounce and can easily make up over half the empty calories in a margarita.

Clean and Colorful Berry Beet Healthy Margarita Recipe

I created this recipe for a segment on San Diego Living, a local morning news show. The producer asked if I could some shake up some Skinny Brunchy Cocktails for Mother’s Day. As luck would have it, it’s also just about Cinco de Mayo so I tossed in this Margarita recipe to round out the segment. I tested it yesterday with a group of my most favorite friends at Sunday Brunch…it was a hit. Needless to say, I felt I must share the recipe with you today!

Clean and Colorful Berry Beet Healthy Margarita Recipe

  • 2 oz Don Julio Tequila
  • 1 oz Berry Beet Juice
  • 1 oz Honey Citrus Spiced Simple Syrup*
  • 2 oz Pink Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 Lime Wedge Garnish
  • Soda water topper, optional
  • 1 Lime wedge garnish

The base of this cocktail is still lime and tequila, hence the  margarita flavor. But the sweet & sour is swapped for pink grapefruit juice and this honey citrus spiced simple syrup. The berry beet juice adds color and a few more nutrition perks. Feel free to swap it for any flavored juice of your choice.

*Honey Citrus Spiced Simple Syrup Recipe

  • 1/4 cup Manuka Honey
  • Juice of 1/2 Fresh Lemon
  • Juice of 1 Fresh Lime
  • Filtered Water*
  • 1/2 tsp High Quality Cinnamon

Directions: Juice the lemon and lime directly into a 1/2 measuring cup, top the rest off with filtered water so you have a 1.5 to 1 ratio of liquid to honey. Add the liquid, honey and cinnamon to a small saucepan and heat to a simmer. Let it cook for a few minutes, so the honey fully dissolves into the liquid. Remove from heat and pour into mason jar to cool and store until you need it, it can last a few weeks, a month max. This recipe makes about 8 oz, make more or less depending on how big your party will be!
