Cut Calories this Christmas — not Cocktails or Comedy!

Merry Christmas to you and all your beautiful friends and family members! May this holiday season bring you more health and happiness than you dreamed possible!

Welcome to the seventh edition of Happy Healthy Holidays, Strategies to help you Eat. Drink & be Skinny this holiday season! Healthy Eat (Dessert): Cut Calories — Not the Color

Don’t skip dessert today, but don’t miss your chance to optimize your  health either by boosting your intake of antioxidant rich and naturally sweetened berries! I love this crumble recipe and I make it all the time. I swap out whichever fruit I’m in the mood for, but blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and we use plums in the version that is featured in Color Yourself Skinny. They all work beautifully in this recipe.

Berry Crumble

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen fruit of your choice
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 4 tsp flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp orange juice
  • 1/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3 T chopped almonds
  • 4 tsp light brown sugar
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 T canola oil

Directions: 

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. Wash and chop (if necessary) your fruit into bit sized pieces. Add to a medium bowl with sugar, 1 1/2 tsp flour, and orange juice.
  3. Combine oats, almonds, brown sugar, remaining flour and cinnamon in a small bowl. Add oil and combine to make crumbly texture. Add mixture to the top of your fruit  mixture.
  4. Bake in oven until fruit is bubbling and top is golden, about 20-25 minutes.

This recipe makes 4 very light servings with only 122 calories and 2 g of fiber each. Feel free to double up the recipe and serve with some sugar free vanilla pudding or vanilla ice cream to sweeten the pot! But it travels well, is a crowd pleaser and has 40% of your vitamin C — helping your friends and family stay healthy this holiday season in addition to happy!

Healthy Drink: Cut Calories — Not the Cocktail!

Cocktails are usually a part of any celebration. And with New Years Eve right around the corner, champagne cocktails will be in demand! This recipe is an old time favorite of mine because it’s so simple, so colorful, so festive, so tasty and so, super skinny! A 5 oz serving of this one will run you about 110 calories if you used reduced sugar cranberry juice.

Paint the Town Red SkinnyTini

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 2 oz champagne
  • 2 oz low sugar cranberry juice

Directions: 

  1. Add vodka and cranberry  juice to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake for 5-10 seconds to chill the mixture and combine flavors.
  2. Strain into a champagne flute and top with champagne.
  3. You can also use a little fresh squeezed orange juice and cinnamon to give it a more complex flavor.

Be Skinny (Healthy Activity):  Cut Calories — not the Comedy!

Instead of an extra piece of pie and zoning out in front of the tube, get active with your friends and family! Play a game — get goofy. If the weather allows, go outside. I grew up playing croquet in my grand parents’s back yard in the Bay Area with my cousins. Toss a football, play tag. Who knows, but running around can be a great way to bond and burn off calories. Or go for a neighbor hood walk and take one last look at all the holiday lights your neighbors worked so hard to put up. If the weather says “no way” — stay inside. Play charades, pictionary, cards against humanity — the idea is to laugh so hard you get in a bonus workout.

The holiday weight loss challenge is officially over! And it was so much fun! We had our team lost an average of 6lbs each — it was amazing!
