If weight loss and healthy eating are on your resolution list this year, you’re not alone. It is generally the #1 resolution every year with over 1 in 5 people resolving to eat better and/or lose weight. The statistics on goal achievement are not quite as favorable or popular with less than 10% of those healthy hopefuls following through on their January motives.
While it sounds pretty dismal that less than 1 of 10 people actually achieve their goals, the good news is — some people do find success! And my goal as your health and happiness coach is make sure you’re one of them this year!
There are four parts to making sure you successfully learn to eat better and/or lose weight this year:
First: Set the right goal!
You can’t get anywhere if you don’t know exactly where you are going. “I want to eat healthier” or “I want to lose weight this year” are very vague and essentially the same as saying “I want to go on vacation.” How in the world can you plan a vacation if you don’t know exactly where you want to go?
This is why my goal guide is so important! It helps make sure you set goals that will make you happy, but that are also specific, measurable, achievable, reasonable and time sensitive (i.e. SMART). If you haven’t already, download my goal guide now and start with a strong plan (FYI, it’s free)!
Second: Make sure you have the right tools!
Oh my gosh it’s information overload in the world of health and wellness! How do you know what to get? I tend to appreciate Walmart for having everything you need. From fitness equipment to supplements, Walmart can be a one-stop shop – and you can even count on them for my most favorite smoothie ingredients!
Here’s my new fav combo…
- MaraNatha Almond Butter. It’s GMO free and I have the creamy one and it’s delicious!
- SixStar Whey Protein. This is a good value for the price with over 32g of protein per scoop!
- Produce! You know me, I’ll stuff anything in the blender. My go-tos are spinach and banana. I still have some frozen pumpkin puree cubes in the freezer as well which add a little extra fiber and bonus plant power.
Then I just toss it all in the blender with water and coffee (if it’s a breakfast shake) and you’re good to go until lunchtime!
Third: Find the support, accountability you need!
You set your goal, you have some tools now you need someone in it with you! Who do you pick? Well, there are some things to keep in mind. Someone closer to you (like your spouse or best friend) will be in it with you on the day-to-day and that can make it easier to the right thing.
On the flip side, someone you know REALLY well, who struggles with the same things as you — may also cave like you! Ha! #partnersincrime, right? So it is also a good idea to collect a more formal, less intimate relationship like a co-worker, friend from the gym, or even a personal trainer or coach. This person won’t let you slip and you won’t want to let them down.
Fourth: Follow up, revisit, and keep going.
Achieving goals is not a “set it and forget it” system. You need to regularly revisit your goals and make sure the actions you’re taking are working. My goal guide can help with this as it comes with trackers. You can also set appointments in your calendar every 30, 60, or 90 days to re-check in with your progress and to revisit the goal holistically. Your accountability buddy should also schedule some check-in time with you.
Easy peasy, right? It really can be if you set yourself up for success this year. There really is no reason why you can’t be the oddball who actually finds themselves at their goal weight in 2018! (Say that out loud, it sounds good!)
