Almost three years ago to the day, I started developing an at home yoga practice. I wanted consistency. I had done yoga before, mainly in my aspirations to get a six pack (still working on that one!).
To get there, I knew that I needed these top 3 things:
A specific time each and every day that I would have to devote to my practice. No excuses, no opportunities for me to fill that time with something else. A solid Monday-Friday system where I didn’t have to second guess myself. And it worked.
I really needed to know exactly what I was going to be doing with that yoga time each and every day that I made time to practice. Without a routine, I’d be debating what video to watch or would give myself the same excuses of I’m too sore/tired/stiff to practice while trying to think about what to do.
I really needed to make sure that I was holding myself accountable to my yoga practice. I needed to remind myself why I was getting on my yoga mat every day and how I wanted to FEEL afterwards.
Once I started doing these 3 things, my practice SOARED.
I started noticing much bigger things happening to me, far more important than getting a six pack.
My anxieties calmed significantly. I got stronger and more flexible.
All of a sudden, my incredibly tight hamstrings were able to get into the splits.
I learned to breathe better.
I learned to let go more often.
And I stressed out a lot less.
Sticking with a yoga routine was a miracle drug. And it still is.
Practicing yoga is never a bad idea. It can change your day around and help you come back to yourself.
