Try this unique healthy recipe for a Matcha Green Tea Smoothie with Avocado and feel great!
Megan Flanagan has been supporting me and my efforts to build this happy, healthy and fit community since October and I so adore her! She is a college student studying nutrition in Texas and a wildly talented cross country runner. I have so enjoyed having her support with research for new blog posts and the dedication she has given to developing the Instagram Account for Eat. Drink & be Skinny and the Twitter account for the 30 Day Challenge Series. She is amazing! I asked her to create a guest post so I could feature her as more than the wonderful behind the scenes support she has been. And true to her nature, not only did she research and write a great blog post for me — she launched her own healthy lifestyle blog! Read below for a great new super food smoothie and check out her healthy lifestyle blog at A Slice of Avocado!
Matcha Green Tea Smoothie with Avocado
You may have heard of Matcha Green Tea Powder, but maybe aren’t sure how to use it – when in fact, it is the perfect ingredient to “green up” smoothies! Matcha is an antioxidant-powerhouse, cancer-fighter and fat-burner and in powdered form, one serving offers more health benefits than 10 cups of green tea! Known as a detoxifier, it also boosts metabolism and is packed with many other health benefits. When paired with avocado, a matcha smoothie offers protein, potassium, and some of those hard-to-find healthy, unsaturated fats.
This green smoothie recipe is simple, subtly sweet, and like no other. The avocado and banana add a creaminess to matcha’s flavor while adding vanilla yogurt or protein powder makes it taste almost like ice cream! The best part is, you can mix up the original by adding a fruit of your choice. My favorites are strawberry-kiwi, banana-berry, or tropical mango – this smoothie is one you can reinvent!
Matcha Green Tea Smoothie with Avocado:
- 2 teaspoons matcha powder
- ½ an avocado
- ½ a frozen banana
- 2 handfuls of spinach (trust me, you won’t taste it)
- ½ cup nonfat or Greek yogurt and/or 1 scoop of protein powder (preferably vanilla)
- 1 cup skim milk or soymilk
- Ice as needed
- If desired, add a fruit of your choice:
- Strawberry-kiwi, extra banana, berries, or mango to flavor it up!
Do you have a favorite way to use Matcha Green tea powder? I’d love to hear about it!

May 1, 2014 Update!
So this is Teresa here — I adored Megan as my intern while I had her and am still grateful to her for this post! It was my first introduction to Matcha Green Tea and since I have been asked to test out DoMatcha DoMatcha Organic 2nd Harvest Matcha and just had my first Matcha Green Tea Smoothie!
It was tasty, changed the flavor of my standard protein shake just a bit but I most LOVED the green color 🙂 So here is another recipe for a fun Matcha Green Tea Smoothie!
Enjoy!

Instead of using the skim milk or soy milk could you use coconut or almond milk?? I don’t use soy products if I can help it and will only use whole milk. Just kind of curious as to what you think.

Sounds lovely, got to try it. Will probably add a little bit of kale for some extra nutrition!

I love that idea! Let us know how it turned out!

What training program are you using? I’m training for Boston also. Let’s do this!

Yes — Let’s! I’m building my own plan right now, but when I get 12 weeks out, I think I’ll work with a coach. What plan are you using? Always happy to find other BMs out there — thank you for chiming in with support! Keep me posted on your training!

I’m in week 4 of the 16 week FIRST(Furman institute of running) training program. I really like it so far.

I think I have hired a coach! I’ve decided that if I’m going to run my heart out and my legs into the ground for the next 12 weeks, I may as well make sure I’m doing the exact right thing for my body. LOL. My best running was when I worked with this firm, so I’m excited to be back with them! Please keeps me posted on how your training is going!
