What is National Running Day?
To me, it’s a little like Valentines day. Running and I have been in a relationship for nearly 20 years. It’s one of the longest standing relationships in my life, and like any of them, it hasn’t always been perfect. There have been high-highs (like crushing my goal time and qualifying for Boston for the first time) and some tear-jerking low-lows (like hearing the doctor say “My dear, you have run your foot into the ground” before he snapped me into a boot to recover from a stress fracture).
Some days I LOVE running and I proudly post pictures of my lovely jog. Some days I simply can’t even think about it. Some days I even cheat on it with other things like spin, yoga, and weight training…even the occasional walk! Running comes with me on every trip I take and often is the main reason for an adventure I set out on. I’ve run as many destination races as local and have learned to efficiently pack all the right gear to support it.
Running has introduced me to new people, places and brought me more joy and heart ache than I could have imagined. It’s taught me that I’m tougher mentally and physically than I would have thought, but that I’m also still human and ultimately very fragile. It’s a balance to enjoy a positive relationship with running. It takes passion and compassion to make it work — just like any serious relationship does. My relationship with running has shaped who I am today. It’s so much more than just “exercise.”
Love it or hate it, running and I are in a pretty serious relationship and that means I’ll be making National Running Day 2016 a day to celebrate this long-standing love affair. I’ll set out on a jog and then have the opportunity to co-host a national Twitter Chat to talk about everybody’s love affair with running! I-seriously-can’t-wait!
