Today I have the perfect Spring cocktail recipe for you! Did you know that this site, Eat. Drink & be Skinny, has its original roots in SkinnyTinis? Way back in the day, like 2007, I started messing around with low calorie cocktails, this was well before the idea was mainstream. In 2009, SkinnyTinis — All the Fun for Half the Calories was published and it will always carry the badge of honor of being the very first low calorie cocktail recipe book on the shelves. In 2012, this site was launched to support the paperback release and today it does a whole lot more to help you find and live your healthiest, happiest life possible.
These days, I don’t talk all that much about SkinnyTinis, mostly because there is a whole heck of a lot more that goes into a well-fueled, strong and healthy body and lifestyle than low-sugar cocktails. But that does not mean I don’t love playing Skinny Mixologist every-so-often either! When the folks over at thebar.com put together the Spring Cocktail challenge to feature Smirnoff Sourced, a new product line that’s made with real fruit juice, I signed myself up! I’m glad I did, this is a tasty treat, perfect for the warmer weather.
The Perfect Spring Cocktail Recipe: Sweet Citrus SkinnyTini
- 1.5 oz Smirnoff Sourced Ruby Red Grapefruit
- 1 oz Honey Citrus Spiced Simple Syrup*
- 2.5 oz Seltzer Water
- Lemon or Lime Wedge
Directions: Add vodka and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into a martini glass, top off with soda water, garnish with citrus wedge and serve.
Honey Citrus Spiced Simple Syrup Recipe
- 1/4 cup Manuka Honey
- Juice of 1/2 Fresh Lemon
- Juice of 1 Fresh Lime
- 1/2 tsp High Quality Cinnamon
- **Filtered Water
Directions: Juice the lemon and lime directly into a 1/4 measuring cup. If it’s not quite full, top the rest off with a bit of filtered water so you have a 1 to 1 ratio of liquid to honey. Add the liquid, honey and cinnamon to a small saucepan and heat to a simmer. Let it cook for a few minutes, so the honey fully dissolves into the liquid. Remove from heat and pour into mason jar to cool and store until you need it. This recipe makes about 8 oz, make more or less depending on how big your party will be!
Why I Love this Springtime Cocktail Recipe
Honey happens to be my sweetener of choice right now. Over anything else, artificial or natural, zero or regular calories. Honey wins for me because it’s honest, simple, won’t confuse my body and also contains trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids and also has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties. I use it carefully and sparingly and it is a key ingredient in this perfect Springtime cocktail recipe. When boiled down with fresh citrus juice and high quality cinnamon, it creates a sweet and tangy flavor with a little kick that is the perfect compliment to the vodka and then lightened up by the soda water.
I invite you to enjoy the Springtime with this cocktail recipe which I’ve decided to call the Sweet Citrus SkinnyTini! It’s made with the Ruby Red Grapefruit flavor, but Smirnoff Sourced also comes in Pineapple and Cranberry Apple. I imagine this Honey, Citrus, Spiced Simple Syrup would work well with any of those flavors.
Teresa in the News! Mixing and Shaking
I made a quick appearance on a local morning news show here in San Diego last week. I shook up this cocktail along with the Berry Beet Margarita and one other perfect Spring Cocktail. If you haven’t seen the spot, here it is!
