The most important shift you need to make for real weight loss

I roll into the new year with my mind set on burning off 7 lbs, I find myself in what must be a very familiar boat to many. Yes, I am a health coach and I’m starting a 30-Day Plan to literally lose weight.

And trust me, I know it’s a lifestyle and not a diet and all that. I’ll get into how I got into this predicament later in another post. I’ll also share my plan with you on how I will climb out of this New Year’s Weight Loss Goal Setter than I’ve become…

But first, let me share my most favorite weight loss mindset with you … just in case you’re in this boat with me…

The most important shift you need to make for real weight loss

Love and Fear. You probably know a lot about each one and may have even realized that life is better when you let love rule. This is most certainly the case with weight loss.

It’s very easy to get mad at yourself, be hard on yourself and feel downright bad about yourself when you start the quest to “lose weight.” It’s not entirely natural to come at it from a positive perspective, as it was likely shame and/or discomfort that led you to the decision to make change.

That’s ok. Fear based emotions are strong and their one benefit is that they do drive change. They will help you take action. But coming from a place of negativity or fear is not a sustainable strategy.

At some point, you’ll forget, get used to it, become numb or pretend you don’t care. You may even reach a place that is no longer uncomfortable, but is still not your true goal and won’t allow you to feel your very best.

As you set your weight loss goal and create a strategy (whether it be a New Years goal or any-old-day you decide you’ve had enough) be sure to frame your situation and come at it from a place of positivity. A place of love. A place of respect. After all, you are choosing to make change because you love your body so much, you know deep down, it deserves better.

Mantras for success

This will require work as temptations rise and motivation dwindles. I’ll share these mantras with you in hopes than one comes in handy along your journey…

When you say no to junk food, think: 

I choose to fuel my body with only the high quality food it deserves.

When you’re considering whether or not to exercise, think: 

I choose to challenge my body to push myself to new limits.

When you’re wondering why you’re doing this, think: 

I choose to enjoy the process of building a stronger, healthier, and more beautiful body.

When you’re staring a doughnut in the face, think: 

I make decisions which pay dividends that last longer than 30-seconds

I hope those help you along your journey at some point, I plan to rely on them frequently. Monday, I’ll share a little bit more about how I got where I am today.
