As you know, I’m Liz, the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist that’s chatted with you before about Buddha Bowls, Metabolism Boosting Chili and Superfoods!

Today I’m sharing with you another passionate subject, snacking!

It’s no surprise I am snacker – I love food! I love snacking so much I’ve written about it here on my Ask the RDN series, here about the p’s of smart snacking, and here too!

Suffice it to say, I’m in love with snacking; but it appears, so are you!

According to recent research, over 94% of Americans snack daily. Snacks can take on many shapes and forms as we know.

Simple Snacks to Avoid the Mid-day Slump

Snacking gets a bad rap when people associate the foods that are less nutrient dense with typical snacking behaviors, such as chips, soda and candy.

But, the beauty of snacking is that it really can be a vehicle to help fill a void in your current nutrient intakes while also giving you that between meal nourishment to give you the energy you need to power through your day.

I always tell my clients focus on the rule of three. Try to hit three food groups with each snack to feel satiated and satisfied. By using different foods with unique textures, tastes and mouth-feels you allow your body to be nourished using all your senses.

Let’s take a look at three simple ways snacking can come to your rescue to provide you with an extra serving or two of veg, a protein boost or simply, a sweet treat, guilt free!

Sure, this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this, but I promise you, it’s so satisfying!  Not only does hummus provide protein, healthy fat and carbohydrates, it’s also fairly inexpensive when you prepare at home! Make a batch of this vegan, gluten free hummus on Sunday to enjoy all week long!
