As Summer hits, the day time parties become much more frequent, yay! But that can be tricky as these can make for long days that can roll into short nights and a miserable following day. So how do you manage to enjoy the event, a little celebration but also pace yourself so you can fully enjoy the event?
Not So Skinny Day Drinking Fact: Let’s say you head to an afternoon BBQ and indulge in fairly normal drinking. Let’s say one drink per hour. Then you head to dinner, and since you’re already feeling light and fuzzy, you have maybe two more. That can be fun! And I hate to be the Grim Reaper of Caloric Bad News, but you’ve just added anywhere between 1-2K calories to your diet, and we’re not talking the food you munched your way through. Ouch!
It’s not to say indulgent days don’t have their place in life.
Trust me, I know they do! My goal as a digital wellness coach is to help you walk the fine line, the tight rope in-between health and happiness. In the spirit of celebrating these warm (and long) Summer days, let me heed you my top tips to avoid toxic overload.
Skinny Day Drinking Tips!
There is no better way to kick off a day of marathon partying than with some hard earned sweat and a good calorie burn. Not only will it make you feel great and make room for a few extra indulgences – you get perspective! If a 60-minute hard-as-heck spin class burns 500 calories, then that jumbo-sized margarita you know is 750 calories might not look so good after all and you might be smarter with your caloric budget.
2. Eat the right food.
And by this I mean two things. First – EAT! Don’t ever skip food calories to save for alcohol calories. That is a bad, bad, bad idea. You loose your sobriety quicker and your good judgment along with it. Second – Don’t eat too much junk. Sometimes it’s not the booze at all that leaves us feeling swollen, sick and sad in the morning, it’s actually a bar-food hangover. Check out this post for my best picks for healthy bar food snacks.
3. Drink the right drink.
This will make or break your day! I’m not a fan of “rules” in general, but I do say don’t order any “doubles,” shots or anything you can’t see through. Simply put, stick to clear/light colored drinks. Get away from anything with unnecessary sugar because that can leave its mark just as bad as the booze. My all-time favorite day drinking recipe is below. Believe the name! White wine spritzers and light beers are always good options as well.
4. Ask for water every chance you get.
And by this I mean “every chance you get!” Not just when you’re feeling tipsy, or because someone else got one. And don’t necessarily rotate water for cocktail because you may forget. Just every time you see water or a waitress, get some and drink it ASAP. Proper hydration is key to staving off the biological urge to drink more booze.
5. Enjoy the party.
This is always my favorite tip. We can often get so wrapped up in the do’s and don’ts of what to eat and drink in the spirit of healthy and happiness that we forget what the party was even about. Remember, this is a day of celebration with your friends. It’s about making memories, not counting calories. Put the focus there, take lots of pictures and enjoy the conversation and the fun!
Best Day Skinny Drinking Recipe: Don’t knock it ‘till you try it
- 3 oz light beer (cheaper the better – something like Miller Highlife is good)
- 3 oz white wine (cheaper the better – something out of a box even works here)
- 3 oz diet sprite (any zero calorie lemon-lime soda works – if something is .99 – buy it!)
Directions: Fill a pint glass to the rim with ice and top with all ingredients, stir and serve! You can also substitute soda water for the sprite if you’d like it a little less sweet.
Nutrition: Following the same schedule I mentioned earlier in the Not So Skinny Fact, this cocktail would only add 329 calories to your daily calorie budget and cannot get sloppy drunk off this recipe, it’s nearly impossible.
Oops: Best Hangover Cures
Let’s say you didn’t follow these tips. Ooops! I hope it was a good party! The best thing to do is forgive yourself and also spend some time figuring out where you went wrong so it doesn’t happen again. Now here are my best hangover cures to get you back on track ASAP.
