Last week it was all about detox and I went into detail about my 3-day detox plan and why it works. This week we are on to the second universal diet truth, eating all 5 colors.
When I talk about eating all 5 colors, I’m not just talking about fresh fruits and vegetables but also other plant based foods that count in terms of color. For instance if you’ve ever taken my Clean & Colorful challenge, you know that on the second week of the coaching program, we spend a whole week talking about spices!
My Turmeric Tonic Shot
I’m going to use 3 spices today and 1 fruit to make what I call Turmeric Tonic Shot. And to be perfectly honest with you, it’s not delicious! However, this shot is very easy to make, pretty dense and potent. The ingredients are not that hard to find and you can make it like 3-4 days in advance. That way you have it on hand and you can just shake it up in the morning, take your shot and go.
But why would I tell you to take something every single morning that doesn’t taste that good when I’m a huge fan of enjoying the food you eat?
Because the nutrients in the shot are so good for you and for so many different reasons. It’s like nature’s original elixirs and medicine. The more proactive we can be with our health and leveraging easy to access, naturally health promoting substances, the easier it will be to stay healthy, happy and living your best life.
Ingredients for the Turmeric Tonic Shot
- 2 teaspoons ground Turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground Cayenne
- 8 ounces water
- 1 lime (juiced)
Directions: Add all the ingredients to a mason jar with a protein shaker, spiral ball thing. Shake for a few seconds and drink your shot and save the rest for later.
I put my turmeric tonic shot in a mason jar because I’m going to save it all week. At the bottom of the jar is a protein ball shaker that I use for my salad dressing and it helps with stirring up the settled ingredients each morning. I take it every morning and although it doesn’t taste good, it makes me feel pretty good. It is also especially good during this cold and flu season when you could use all the help you can get.
Why add Turmeric Powder?
Spices have been used as original medicine for thousands of years, and turmeric is probably one of the most well researched. Turmeric is the base of curry and it is what gives curry its bright orange color. I sum it up and call it anti-inflammatory. And since we know the root cause of all diseases is inflammation, turmeric has a massive potent anti-inflammatory impact and taking it every single day will be giving your body that little bit of boost it needs to stay healthy.
So the key ingredient here will be turmeric. You can get it fresh or in powder form. When you buy it fresh it’s like an ugly looking root and almost looks like a beetle and you generally juice it. I buy it in powder form from the Farmers Market but you can get it from your local whole foods and it’s not expensive. I get all my spices from the Farmers Market.
Why add Cinnamon?
I add cinnamon because it It tastes good and also has some anti-microbial impact which can help out your immune system. It is also very well understood in terms of blood glucose regulation. I talk a lot about stable blood sugar and how you can avoid these massive spikes because if you can avoid blood sugar spikes then you can avoid insulin; and if you can avoid insulin then you can avoid fat storage!
It’s also cheap and easy to find. Again, I get at the Farmers Market because there’s some really crappy cinnamon out there and it’s better to get some high quality clean cinnamon.
Why add Cayenne?
Cayenne is also very well researched and understood in terms of fat burning. There are people who’ve added half a teaspoon of cayenne to their diets for like 6 weeks and lost more weight than the control group. Plus, it gives it a good flavor kick.
Why add Fresh Lime Juice?
Fresh lime juice will give you Vitamin C that’s going to help with immunity and there are some benefits to the Lime Juice working well with the Turmeric. Plus, again, it’s an interesting flavor.
And that’s it. That’s how you make the DIY anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, fat burning, blood glucose regulating, immunity boosting elixir at home.
